A 7-year-old boy is in critical condition after falling down an elevator shaft Thursday, April 21, in the Bronx. It happened around 12:30 p.m. in a building on the Grand Concourse, reports ABC 7
Arriving firefighters found an unconscious child living on the second floor on top of the elevator, which was located in the basement of the building. According to rumors, the boy suffers from autism. He was rushed to Harlem Hospital in critical condition. Police said the child had a skull fracture. But doctors believe he will survive.
The boy's grandfather Segundo Campoverde, holding back tears, said the 7-year-old needed surgery and was in a critical condition. The police said that the boy somehow got out of the apartment where his grandfather and the housekeeper were at that time. Campoverde explained that the woman went to the toilet. In the blink of an eye, the child opened the door of their apartment and took off running.

It is not clear how he got out, because four locks are set high on the door. “He is very hyperactive, he opened the door,” neighbor Monica Villalta said.
Everyone was afraid that the boy would run out into the street. But they could not imagine that he would go up to the sixth floor and somehow manage to get into the elevator room. It was there that the child apparently fell through the hole between the wall and the bars. It is unclear what floor the elevator was on when it fell. But there is speculation that the elevator was not fully lowered into the basement. Then someone in the elevator heard the baby. Firefighters escorted him out through the front doors of the first floor lobby. There are cameras throughout the building. The police said that it was not long before the child left the apartment before the grandfather and the housekeeper went looking for him.
“I was shocked,” said building resident Dudley Blake. “I've lived here for several years and this has never happened before. I do not know what's going on."
The investigation continues.
According to the Department of Buildings website, there were 42 violations in the building in question. The last one happened in 2015.
