An immigrant from Ukraine was recognized as a 'health heroine' of New York

Schneps Media chose four "health heroes" of New York. They were selected for leadership and achievements in the field of medicine. One of the winners was Svetlana Lipyanskaya is an immigrant from Ukraine who now heads South Brooklyn Health.
Svetlana moved to New York from Odessa when she was 10 years old. First, the family settled in Bensonhurst and lived there for more than 10 years, and then moved to Gravesend. Svetlana is fluent in Russian, which is spoken by many patients of the hospital in Brooklyn. This, along with her great experience and professionalism, was one of the reasons for her appointment to the position of hospital manager in 2020.
“I still remember the moment I got off the plane at JFK and arrived in South Brooklyn. Now I have a wonderful opportunity to make a direct contribution to the health and well-being of this wonderful community that has become our home,” Svetlana said in 2020, commenting on her appointment to the publication Slavic sacramento.
Lipyanskaya is the first female CEO in the history of NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health (formerly NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island). The goal of the hospital, she calls the availability, quality and focus on the patient. Svetlana has led the establishment of several life-saving services and programs in the area, including a new cardiac catheterization laboratory and the certification of a percutaneous coronary intervention program.

Her wise approach to budget management has resulted in hospital revenues exceeding expenses by tens of millions of dollars. It has raised nearly $40 million in capital funding to expand hospital services.
“I accept this award on behalf of the courageous men and women of our hospital who work tirelessly for the well-being of our patients. These people are true heroes who keep our communities healthy every day,” she said. Svetlana Lipyanskaya at the Schneps Media Awards.
Over the past three years, Lipyanskaya has received several important awards:
- 2021: Be Proud, Inc. - Award "Outstanding woman of the community";
- 2021 and 2022: City & State - Brooklyn Power 100;
- 2022: Becker's Hospital Review - Local Hospital Director Everyone Should Know award.
In addition to Lipnyanskaya, the recipients of the award were: Shila Maru, MD, OB/GYN and director of the Global Health Institute at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst; Brindha Sridhar, VP of Customer Experience Strategy at MetroPlusHealth; Julie Myers, MD, Associate Chief Medical Officer, MetroPlusHealth.
In total, this year the list of nominees and laureates included 43 people. Schneps Media is a New York-based media company that operates several newspapers, magazines and websites with a total readership of over 2 million readers per week.
