Alec Baldwin will play in a Broadway play: this is his first role after the murder of a Ukrainian woman on the set

Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin plans to return to acting this season on Broadway. A source exclusively told the publication New York Postthat the actor, who has not acted anywhere since the tragedy on the set of "Rust" (Rust) in 2021, will play the main role in the play "Art" (Art) by Yasmina Reza.

The 64-year-old actor will be joined by Tony Shalhoub and John Leguizamo, while Tony winner Matthew Warchus has been named director.

Art is likely to open in the spring at the Schubert Theatre.

The show marks Baldwin's first job since the 2021 fatal shooting of cinematographer Galina Hutchins while filming Rust in New Mexico. Baldwin had a pistol loaded with live ammunition.

This month, the New Mexico Office of Medical Investigators concluded that the shooting was an accident, and Baldwin said he did not pull the trigger. However, a conflicting FBI report states that the trigger must have been pulled. Prosecutors have not determined whether charges should be filed.

In a highly unusual move for Broadway, The Art has already secured its place, its stars, and its director, even though it has no real producer. According to the source, the production was prepared by the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which currently performs production functions. CAA is said to be auditioning New York producers.

Reza's play, set in Paris and written in her native French, is a satire on the art world. The show, which featured Alfred Molina, Victor Garber and Alan Alda in New York, won the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play.

Baldwin's last major play on Broadway was Orphans in 2013. In 1992, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his portrayal of Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire alongside Jessica Lange, John Goodman and Diane Lane.

Baldwin stated that he found it difficult to return to work after the shooting.

“I was fired from another job yesterday,” he said. “There I was ready to go to the movies, jump on a plane… I talked to these guys for several months, and yesterday they told me that we don’t want to do a movie with you.”

He also said he was traumatized by Hutchins' death.

“The fact that she died is the worst thing. Someone died and it could have been avoided,” he added. “I think about it every day of my life.”
