Amazon has cut 700 jobs in New York City alone as part of a massive job reduction plan targeting 30,000 jobs. New York Post.
The company confirmed that the layoffs affected only office employees and were distributed across nine locations.
Two locations were hit hardest. 233 people were laid off at Amazon's offices at 450 W. 33rd St. near Hudson Yards. Another 182 employees lost their jobs at 424 Fifth Ave., the former Lord & Taylor flagship store that Amazon acquired in 2020 for $1 billion.
"I believe the vast majority of those laid off are tech employees, and New York is no exception," said Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives. "The scale of the layoffs at Amazon raises questions given the competition for talent and the ongoing AI revolution."
Company representatives declined to disclose details but noted that the layoffs did not affect warehouse and delivery workers.
In late October, the Seattle, Washington, headquarters announced it would lay off 14,000 employees as part of a restructuring. According to Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, the goal was to "reduce bureaucracy, reduce layers of management, and reallocate resources to key areas."

The company plans to lay off approximately 30,000 office workers in total—approximately 9% of its global office team. The layoffs will continue in January, after the holiday season.
Since Andy Jassy took over as CEO in 2021, replacing billionaire Jeff Bezos, Amazon has already cut tens of thousands of jobs.
Despite the layoffs, Amazon traditionally employs thousands of workers at its facilities, and there are no plans to close the nine New York offices where the layoffs occurred.
As of 2023, the Lord & Taylor building, converted into the New York Tech Hub, employed approximately 2,000 people.
Amazon's recent layoffs in New York City include 91 jobs at 410 Tenth Ave., 58 at 7 W. 34th St., 41 at 330 W. 34th St., 38 at 237 Park Ave., nine at 315 Park Ave. S, seven at 215 Park Ave. S, and one at 6 W. 35th St.
"Some may ask why we're cutting staff when the company is doing well," Galetti noted. "AI is the most transformative technology since the internet, and it allows companies to innovate much faster."
