Among American Jews, the New York mayor proved more popular than Netanyahu.

A new national poll has found that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani enjoys greater support among American Jews than Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The study also reveals growing disillusionment among young and liberal Jews with the Israeli government's policies and the war in Gaza. DailyNews tells in more detail.

According to a poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research of more than 1,000 Americans, the Jews, 44% of respondents positively evaluate the work of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. At the same time, 39% expressed negative opinions about him.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received significantly lower ratings. Only 32% of American Jews have a favorable view of him, while 59% expressed an unfavorable opinion.

Among all Americans, Mamdani is less popular

However, among the general US population, attitudes toward Mamdani were less favorable.

The poll found that those who disapprove of his performance slightly outnumber those who approve—28% to 27%. Netanyahu also has a negative rating among all Americans.

However, his approval rating was about 10% higher than among American Jews.

Despite disagreements with the Jewish community

The study's authors note that Mamdani's results were unexpected.

During the 2025 elections, he received comparatively weak support among Jewish voters.

Furthermore, throughout his political career, Mamdani has consistently criticized Israeli policies. Part of the Jewish community was particularly concerned by his refusal to explicitly state that Israel should exist as a Jewish state.

He also refused to unequivocally condemn the slogan "Globalize the Intifada."

Many Jewish groups believe the slogan is fueling anti-Semitism amid rising threats and attacks against Jews in New York and across the country.

Mamdani also drew additional criticism after he failed to attend the Israeli parade in Manhattan last month.

The mayor himself says he takes the Jewish community's concerns seriously. He emphasizes that criticism of Israeli policies is not an expression of anti-Semitism.

Young Jews are increasingly critical of Israel.

The survey was conducted in June. The margin of error is approximately 5%. The authors believe the results may reflect broader dissatisfaction with Israel's policies among Democrats and liberal-minded Americans.

Many young and secular Jews traditionally support the Democratic Party and hold liberal views.

Until recently, American Jews generally actively supported Israel. However, researchers note that this trend is gradually changing.

The reasons cited include Netanyahu's support for controversial military operations in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, Israel's involvement in the military conflict with Iran alongside the administration of President Donald Trump, and support for the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

The study's authors note that attitudes toward Israel are becoming increasingly critical, especially among younger and less religious Jews.

This group increasingly feels less and less close ties to Israel, Jewish community organizations and their leaders.

About 30% of Jews surveyed believe that Israel committed genocide in the Gaza Strip. Almost half of respondents disagree. Another 20% were undecided.

Among Americans overall, roughly the same percentage believes Israel is guilty of genocide. However, only about 20% disagree with this assessment. Almost half of survey respondents were unable to provide a definitive answer.

Trump has far less support

Additionally, the survey found that American Jews are significantly less likely to approve of President Donald Trump's performance than the general US population.
