Part of the streets of New York will be closed for cars in connection with quarantine: list

The plan is to stop traffic on some streets, as traffic in the city has significantly decreased. Such a step will reduce the crowding of the population in a number of urban areas. Traffic in New York has declined significantly. This happened after quarantine was introduced in the city due to the epidemic of coronavirus. In this regard, the city authorities decided to temporarily make some streets pedestrian. This was stated by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo during a March 25 press conference.

This is a pilot project, which will be implemented in agreement with the mayor of the city, Bill de Blasio, the governor noted.

“We will open the carriageway for people who need to walk and be in the air,” explained Cuomo. He added that this will reduce the number of cases of coronavirus infection, as it will reduce overcrowding in some urban areas.

Recall that from March 20, residents of New York State are ordered not to leave home unnecessarily. This rule does not affect employees of hospitals, pharmacies, grocery stores, gas stations and rescue services.

Despite this, residents of the city, regardless of employment, have the right to go for walks, go in for sports in the open air and shop in stores.

According to The New York Times, similar restrictions are imposed in 17 states, 26 counties and ten cities in the United States, where about 175 million people live.

What streets will become pedestrian

Overlapping in total will affect about 2,6 km of nearly 10 thousand km of city roads.

Each of these streets will be closed to cars from 10:00 am to 19:00 pm for the duration of the four-day experiment, from Friday, March 27th to Monday, March 30th.

• Manhattan: Park Avenue, between 28th and 34th Streets.
• Brooklyn: Bushwick Avenue, between Johnson Avenue and Flushing Avenue.
• Queens: 34th Avenue, from 73rd Street to 80th.
• Bronx: Grand Concert, between East Burnside Avenue and 184th Street.

Staten Island was not included in this list, but a spokesman for the city hall said more closures could happen. Earlier, Bill de Blasio promised to close two streets in each area to give pedestrians more space for walking during quarantine.

Police will monitor compliance with social distance protocols on temporarily pedestrian streets.

Cars parked on these streets may remain in place, New York City Hall added.
