History Channel will tell about the mafia families of New York. A new six-hour documentary series explores the birth, rise and fall of five Big Apple mafia clans, reports SiLive.
American Godfather: The Five Families debuts Sunday, August 11 at 20:00 pm on the History Channel. The executive producer is actor Michael Imperioli, an Emmy Award winner for The Sopranos.
The series is based on Selwyn Raab's New York Times bestselling book Five Families: The Rise, Decline and Resurgence of America's Most Powerful Mafia Empires. Film traces the extensive history of the Mafia from its early connections to Sicily.

The story and eventual breakdown of the code of silence, coupled with the brutal power struggles within each of the five families, is covered in each two-hour episode.
The film uses archival materials, images, footage, audio recordings and reconstructions.
You will be able to see new interviews, removed on camera with authors including Raab himself, historians, experts, law enforcement officials, witnesses and former Mafia members. Viewers will have the opportunity to look inside the most powerful criminal organization of the 20th century.
