Two small children died mysteriously while their mother was in the shower: there are no signs of violence or trauma on the bodies

Five-year-old twins - a boy and a girl - were found dead on the floor of a Bronx apartment on Monday, December 19, according to New York Post.

It was not immediately possible to find out how the children, who had no visible signs of injury, died. Their mother told officers she put the children down to take a shower and returned to find their cold bodies on the living room floor of their East 175th Street apartment in Claremont Village.

She was in severe shock and had to be admitted to BronxCare Health System for observation. According to sources, the father of the twins, who was at work at the time, rushed home after learning about the incident.

The children were found around 11:20 a.m., and emergency personnel arrived and pronounced the children dead at the scene, police said.

“At this time, we do not know if there is any foul play involved because the investigation is not yet complete,” said NYPD Assistant Chief Benjamin Gourley, commander of the Bronx borough patrol. “The medical examiner and crime scene unit are upstairs and will be examining the crime scene while we obtain a search warrant.”

Both kids had been feeling unwell for several days and were sent home from school last week. They stayed home sick on Monday as well. The family has no domestic violence records with the NYPD or open records with the city's Department of Children's Services.

The FDNY checked air quality in the building and ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning as a factor in the children's deaths, a police spokesman said. The official conclusion on the cause of death will be issued by the city medical examination.
