An exhibition of famous actor Johnny Depp's work, A Bunch of Stuff, has opened in Chelsea. It immerses viewers in the star's artistic work. Time-out told what awaits viewers in the actor's universe.
A Bunch of Stuff runs until November 30. Tickets are available now here.
“I don’t know Johnny Depp – like most people on this planet, I’ve never met him. But walking through his new exhibition in Chelsea feels like a one-sided conversation with the actor. That is, he’s talking to me,” Anna Rahmanan shared her impressions of the exhibition.
On the subject: Dark, Psychedelic, and Surreal: Manhattan Exhibition You Can't Miss
The exhibit is housed inside the Starrett-Lehigh building on 27th Street on Manhattan's West Side. A Bunch of Stuff looks and feels exactly like the person the 61-year-old award-winning artist actor has been broadcasting to audiences since its first appearance on stage in “A Nightmare on Elm Street” 40 years ago.
Performance or reality
A Bunch of Stuff is filled with dark objects and an eclectic mix of gothic elements (including lots of skulls) that feel edgy yet artistic.
Moreover, it is impossible to separate the art that Depp has created and presented to the public for the first time from the media spectacle in which the actor participated two years ago. Then he sued his ex-wife Amber Hurd for libel after she wrote an article in which she claimed the actor had physically abused her.
In some ways, the exhibition feels like a monologue for Depp, where he can, uninterrupted by Heard, express his opinions to the paparazzi or anyone else.
The life of an actor in the exhibition space
A Bunch of Stuff is arranged in a circle, with a black screen in the middle. The artist wanted the exhibition to be perceived as an immersive experience rather than a traditional exhibition.
The varied artwork on the walls includes many of the same pieces that would normally be found at Depp's country estate in Provence, southern France. The space is filled with items from the actor's life: sofas, tables, drawing supplies and more.
Perhaps the most striking piece in the exhibition is a work by Depp's mother, Betty Sue Palmer.
This beautiful portrait was painted back in 2006. This painting is covered with Depp's favorite Rizla rolling papers.
The actor also pays homage to his late dog Moo with a massive piece at the end of the exhibit. There's a merchandise shop on site. You can buy a replica of Moo, matches with Depp's face printed on them, sweaters, and smaller versions of some of the works on display.
Upon entering, guests find themselves face to face with a series of framed paintings depicting seemingly simple sentences and thoughts.
“Her beauty is a sight to behold!” reads one of the captions.
“It’s hard to speak when you’re frozen in a scream,” reads another painting.
Not a character, but a person
“The aim of the exhibition is to take visitors on an emotional journey through the creative world of Johnny Depp,” explained Anne-Sophie Villemin, an art consultant who worked closely with the artist on the art project. “Through a concept that combines the physical and the digital, artworks as well as personal artefacts and animation, Depp is able to share his personal story and show the scale of his creative mind. The aim is to inspire others to create and not limit themselves to traditional boundaries.”
A Bunch of Stuff takes viewers into Depp's world, at least the fictional part of it.
This deep dive is complemented by the exhibition’s centerpiece, which sits in the middle of the space. It’s a 14-minute clip playing inside a curtained section of the exhibit. In the clip, Depp discusses his inspiration, his relationship with the blank canvas, and his thoughts on life in general.
“I’ve been more people than most people,” he says in the video. “Do I have something to offer? Is there something unique I can add to something?”
It's clear that Depp is trying hard to stand out from the crowd of characters he's brought to life over his long career. Perhaps embracing himself wholeheartedly and presenting himself as Johnny Depp, rather than Johnny Depp playing someone else, could end up being the most important and challenging role of his life. It remains to be seen whether the public will believe him and embrace him.
