Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams has received Albanian citizenship and a passport. The decision was made by a special decree from the country's president. Gothamist and the politician's representatives confirmed.
Adams applied for citizenship, which was subsequently approved by President Bayram Begaj.
Representative of the Adams confirmed this information. The decision was published in Albania's official state newspaper.
The translation of the decree reads: "I decree that citizenship be granted... to Eric Leroy Adams. This decree shall take effect immediately and shall be published in the official gazette."

Adams spokesman Todd Shapiro said Albania's decision reflects "a long-standing relationship and mutual respect."
"Leaders around the world have historically received honorary or dual citizenship as a symbol of international partnership and shared values," he noted. "This recognition further strengthens the bond between New York and Albania."
Political career and elections
Eric Adams is a former New York City police captain. He served as mayor from early 2022 to late 2025.
During his reelection campaign, he withdrew from the Democratic primary. This occurred amid a federal corruption case that was ultimately dismissed following the intervention of the Trump administration.
Adams later attempted to run as an independent candidate, but subsequently withdrew. He endorsed former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and criticized Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani.
