Scientists have developed a new drug to quickly stop bleeding from gunshot wounds, stab wounds and other injuries. Doctors can now stop severe bleeding in seconds with a newly approved gel, reports Fox News.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved TRAUMAGEL. It is intended to immediately stop severe bleeding.
Developed by Cresilon Inc., a Brooklyn-based biotech company, TRAUMAGEL is a plant-based hydrogel that comes in a pre-filled syringe.
Rescuers, paramedics and military medics can use the gel to quickly stop severe bleeding from bullet wounds, stab wounds or other traumatic injuries.
Revolutionary medicine
Joe Landolina, CEO and co-founder of Cresilon, invented the gel in his dorm room when he was a 17-year-old chemistry and bioengineering student at New York University.

There are currently a variety of gauze pads, powders and sponges used to stop bleeding, but Landolin says they have limitations.
"Unlike TRAUMAGEL, these products are difficult to apply to wounds. It is often painful and very risky," he said.
TRAUMAGEL, which resembles hummus in color and texture, works instantly. It creates a mechanical barrier in place wounds.
“This barrier then allows the patient to quickly produce their own natural clot that does not mix with TRAUMAGEL. This then allows the TRAUMAGEL to be removed without damaging the clot,” Landolina explained.
According to the instructions, the gel should be removed within 24 hours.
This product is perhaps a big step forward in controlling acute bleeding in the field. Even in cases of head trauma, gunshot wounds and stab wounds.
“The benefits are that it’s plant-based and works very quickly without a lot of protocol or preparation,” said Dr. Mark Siegel, a clinical professor. medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center.
"It can also be squeezed out of a syringe so it can be applied into tight corners and crevices without requiring external pressure," he added.
As studies show, severe bleeding from traumatic wounds can lead to death in minutes in more than 35% of all cases at the pre-hospital stage.
Up to 60% of deaths from bleeding occur within the first three hours after injury.
According to the company, the product is planned to be released in the United States in late 2024.
