How to Get a Real ID in New York: This ID Will Be Mandatory for Everyone Very Soon

If you're planning to fly next summer, you may be denied boarding if you don't have the required identity cards. As reported by Silive, Americans have just over a year left to apply for Real ID.

Real id is a new form of identification that will soon become mandatory for domestic air travel. Beginning May 7, 2025, the federal government will require domestic passengers to carry a driver's license or other Real ID-compliant identification.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offers its residents two options: standard Real ID or Enhanced ID. Both documents will allow travelers to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings.

In addition, Enhanced ID will allow state residents to cross U.S. land and sea borders with Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries without the need for a passport. It does not give the right to air travel between these countries - only to land and sea travel. A passport is still required for all international flights.

What is the difference

Real IDs are marked with a star logo in the upper right corner, while Enhanced IDs have a banner that says “Enhanced” and an American flag in the lower right corner.

Standard identification cards, which are still valid for purposes other than domestic travel and entry into federal buildings, now include the phrase “Not For Federal Purposes” in the upper right corner.

There is no additional cost to obtain a Real ID, but all normal transaction fees still apply. The upgraded ID will cost an additional $30 on top of regular transaction fees.

An Enhanced Driver License (EDL) and a valid US passport already meet REAL ID Act requirements and can be used to board an airplane. Those who want to obtain a Real ID must go to a DMV office. You cannot obtain a Real ID online, by phone or by mail.

Documents required to obtain Real ID or Enhanced ID:

• Proof of identification (such as a valid license, birth certificate or passport) showing your full name. This name will appear on your card as required by federal law.
• If you have a valid New York license, permit or ID, you must bring your original Social Security Card or W-2 with your full SSN. If you do not have a driver's license or New York State ID, you will need to bring your Social Security card or a letter from the Social Security Administration proving that you are not eligible for a Social Security number.
• Birth certificate.
• Documentation demonstrating U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, or temporary legal status in the United States.
• Two different proofs of New York State residency, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or mortgage statement (PO Box does not work).

If the name on your license, permit, or non-driver's license application does not match the name on your identification documents, you must bring a court or government report confirming the name change.
