An IKEA store will open in the heart of the Fifth Avenue shopping district in Manhattan in a new office tower, reports NBC.
The tower is located at 570 Fifth Avenue, between West 46th and 47th Streets. The IKEA store will be located on two levels of the building.
The tower will be handed over to tenants in 2028. Exact opening date store IKEA has not been announced.
Expansion into major city centers
“The next phase of our U.S. expansion is to bring IKEA closer to people in city centers,” said Javier Quiñones, General Manager of Sustainability for IKEA U.S. “We are still in the very early stages of planning store locations. We want to satisfy the home improvement dreams of many New Yorkers.”

People like IKEA for everyday items, as well as for big purchases once every ten years. In recent years, this production and trading group has opened more shops in city centers including Tokyo, Madrid, Paris and London.
History of attempts
The only IKEA store in New York is located in Red Hook in Brooklyn, while the Queens store closed in 2022.
In 1995, the company opened a mini-IKEA at 135 East 57th Street. The store has attracted a lot of attention, reports Surbed. It was relatively new in New Jersey at the time. Each visit created the atmosphere of boarding a mysterious Scandinavian spaceship.
This 57th Street store was small and functioned as a showroom to introduce IKEA. It closed after a couple of years.
The company tried opening a store again in 2019, this time at 999 Third Avenue. It had an area of 1500 square meters and was called Ikea Planning Studio. The idea was that professionals could help with the design of kitchen and wardrobes.
It's hard to say whether it failed or was closed in anticipation of a new retail space, but this outlet closed after just three years, and a similar store in Rego Park came and went even faster.
