An immigrant woman gave birth in a hospital toilet and threw it in the trash

A 21-year-old Mexican immigrant was found covered in blood at a Staten Island hospital. As it turned out, she had just given birth to a child and threw it in the trash in the toilet. The woman was arrested New York Post.

Police officers arrived at the Staten Island University Hospital after an NYPD officer who was there spotted a bloodied Lucia Garcia.

When Garcia came out of the restroom, the police officer thought she needed medical attention because of the blood on her clothes and informed the hospital staff, who began examining her. They thought she was bleeding.

Officers and a member of the hospital's cleaning crew then heard the baby crying and found the baby in the trash can. The baby was taken to a hospital in Manhattan in a stable condition.

The woman's father, Ambrosio Garcia, 41, said he brought her to the hospital because she was not feeling well, but she allegedly insisted she was not pregnant and hid her condition from him.

“When she came out of the closet, she said she had her period,” Garcia said. “There was a lot of blood on her. Then the police went into the toilet and there was a little boy in a trash can.”

Garcia said police took his daughter away after they found the baby and he hasn't spoken to her since.

“She’s all alone there,” her father said. “I don't know if she's okay. I'm sad because I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't have money for a lawyer - I don't earn that much. I'm very sad. I don't feel well either. I never thought this could happen to me."

The man said that he had been living in New York for four years, and his daughter arrived in July. Her mother remained in Mexico. Father and daughter shared a room in a Staten Island apartment, Lucia washed dishes at a nearby restaurant until it closed a few weeks ago.

Ambrosio Garcia said that about three months ago he asked his daughter if she was pregnant, but she insisted that she was not.

Police determined that the woman was 32 weeks pregnant when she gave birth in the toilet.

Garcia said he was relieved when hospital workers told him his grandson was doing well.

Police said Lucia Garcia, who previously applied for asylum in the United States, has been charged with endangering the well-being of a child.
