Anti-Semitism Incidents Reach All-Time High in New York and New Jersey

Anti-Semitic incidents in the United States have reached an all-time high in 2021. New York and New Jersey account for almost 30% of the total reported cases, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said Tuesday. NBC New York.

Vandalism, harassment, and attacks on members of the Jewish community have risen sharply in the past year, according to the ADL's annual report. This is due to the reduction of covid restrictions. And also with the negative reaction to the Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in May 2021.

The ADL recorded 416 incidents in New York in 2021, including a record 51 attacks, most of them in Brooklyn. The group reported another 370 incidents in New Jersey, also a record.

“The alarming surge in anti-Semitic incidents in our state should be of deep concern to all, Jews and non-Jewish alike,” Scott Richman, ADL Regional Director for New York and New Jersey, said in a statement. “The incidents included a huge number of violent attacks, often directed against Jewish individuals on the streets of New York, including young children. This is incredibly disturbing.”

The rise in antisemitic incidents reflects a broader trend in the city. Hate crimes increased by 24% in the first four months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. Their number increased by another 32% during the same period this year, according to the NYPD.
