From Los Angeles to New York for $77: Porsche electric car sets a record

The electric Porsche broke the U.S. crossing record with the shortest charge time. It traveled from Los Angeles to New York in less than 2,5 hours of charging, reports Independent.

The 2021 Porsche Taycan, driven by electric vehicle enthusiast Wayne Gerdes, traveled more than 4500 km (2800 miles) from coast to coast, taking just two hours, 26 minutes and 48 seconds to recharge at Electrify America stations along the way.

It beat the existing record by almost three times and was five times better than the record charging time set by the Tesla Model S.

Journey ended on November 12, 2021, but only recently it was entered into the Guinness Book of Records.

“I am proud and, frankly, I was a little surprised by such a gap in the new record,” Gerdes said.

Taycan performed even better than expected. Its performance, comfort and road holding were excellent, but the standout performance along with its charging capacity was its efficiency.

The entire trip cost only $76,82 for electricity from charging stations.

“Today, I cannot drive around the country on petrol or diesel fuel for such a small amount. So I drive an exotic performance-focused sports car,” Gerdes added. “Minimum waiting time on a charge and maximum time owners spend on the road or at their destination is an advantage that will pay dividends in the coming years.”

The record was set using a stock 2021 Porsche Taycan. However, new battery technologies could soon drastically improve the charging time and range of electric vehicles.

Modified last year Tesla, equipped with a next-generation battery, was able to travel over 1200 km on a single charge, nearly double that of the standard Model S and most production gasoline-powered vehicles.

Mercedes has also promised a range of 965 km for its Vision EQXX prototype.
