What is important to know about the census

There are no questions in the questionnaire related to immigration status or citizenship.

All responses and any personal data held by the Census Bureau are protected by Section XIII of the United States Code, which makes the transfer to third parties or other federal authorities of any personal information a serious crime, punishable by imprisonment of up to five years and a fine of $ 250.

According to the law, the information obtained during the census can be used only for statistical purposes and in no way can be used against any person or family. The Census Bureau cannot transfer any personal information to any government agencies, individuals, or companies, including law enforcement agencies, any federal, state, or city departments.

Why immigrants need to take part in the census

The census will determine whether New York City receives a fair share of the funding allocated by the federal government each year for important programs and services. Since this amount depends on population size, the more New Yorkers fill out the census questionnaire, the more money the city will receive for schools, hospitals, transportation, vocational training and more. There is a direct relationship here: if the number of elderly people in the city has increased (compared to the data of the previous census), the federal government will increase funding for programs for them; if the number of students has increased, then more money will be allocated for schools and extracurricular projects.

The census also determines the percentage of each state’s representation in Congress, as well as the boundaries of local, state, and federal constituencies. This means that the system of forming the power of the city and the state of New York, as well as the federal legislative body, depends on the results of the census, and each resident will receive the maximum representation if it is taken into account during the census.
