How to start a career in politics: a cool scholarship program starts in New York

Become a New York State Scholar in 2024 and earn $85 per year while you study. Applications for the 000-2024 Empire State Fellows program will begin on January 2026, 5, Silive reports.

A prestigious full-time leadership development program designed to prepare the next generation of professionals to become New York State policymakers. For over a decade, graduates of this program have served as deputy commissioner, deputy secretary and chief of staff in various state agencies.

Applicants to the program will train from September 2024 to September 2026, and candidates will receive an annual salary of $85 and benefits. Upon completion of the program, Empire State Fellows will be awarded the opportunity to continue serving as leaders in New York State government.

The Empire State Fellows program is based on direct involvement in New York State government. The Governor's Office will be responsible for individually assigning each Fellow to serve with a Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, or other senior policymaker within a New York State agency or authority.

An introductory course will begin in September 2024, and then educational courses of the program will be held every half month. Professional development activities, such as a mentoring program and regular meetings with government leaders, will ensure collaboration with state policymakers.

Qualification requirements for candidates:

• Candidates must demonstrate professionalism through a variety of skills, demonstrating creativity and strong leadership potential. Have analytical and evaluation skills, strong interpersonal and communication skills and more.

• Minimum of five years of full-time professional experience with demonstrated leadership skills. Managerial experience is an advantage. Candidates can be from any professional background.

• Higher education (Master's degree, JD, PhD or equivalent) preferred. Applicants with a bachelor's degree may be considered if they have significant professional experience. Candidates may come from all academic disciplines.

• Applicants must be eligible to work in New York State without employer sponsorship.

• Applicants must be able to work in Albany, New York for the entire two-year program.

• Current New York State executive and legislative branch employees are not eligible to participate in the program.

To apply, candidates must complete online form after January 5, 2024. A fully completed form includes a resume or curriculum vitae, a personal statement of interest in the program (why you should be selected), and two letters of recommendation highlighting leadership abilities and professional preparation for the program.
