On October 18, the city authorities unveiled Mayor Eric Adams' tent city, which will provide three meals a day, laundry services, and a variety of entertainment, including television and video games, to an illegal immigrant, reports New York Post.
“This is a place where people can come and relax and unwind after the journey they have made,” said City Emergency Commissioner Zak Iskol.
It is planned that the first wave of 500 single men will begin to move into tents on October 19th. On this day, they should arrive from Texas at the Port Authority bus station in midtown Manhattan.
Iscol called it "a short-term solution for people to figure out what their next destination will be." However, no one will be kicked out for staying longer than four days.
“Our goal is to get you where you want to go, not to limit how many hours you can be here,” said Dr. Ted Long, senior vice president of NYC Health + Hospitals.
Adams has previously said the deadline will not be set in part because the city is struggling with a housing shortage due to the continued flow of migrants being flown to New York from Texas. The number of arrivals as of October 16 reached 20 people.
Some aspects of the campus environment are designed for long-term living
Including a rotating menu of dishes prepared on site in a fully equipped commercial kitchen.
“All these dishes are in keeping with the cultural traditions of the migrants' home countries. It's South American food,” Iscol said. “People have been provided with food, which is great. Our team, myself included, have been eating this food for the last couple of weeks.”
In addition, snacks will be provided. Coffee, tea and water will be available around the clock.
Each huge tent (there are three of them in the town) has more than 60 dining tables. There is also a lounge with two popcorn machines, TVs, board games, Xbox, ping-pong and foosball tables. There is also a communication hub, consisting of 12 phones, with which you can make international calls.

The entire site of the tent camp is equipped with Wi-Fi. And heating and cooling systems will keep the temperature in all tents around 21 degrees Celsius.
Adams missed the October 18 press conference. City Hall later stated that he did so because he inspected the facility on the evening of 17 October. Adams originally announced on September 22 that a tent city would be built in the Orchard Beach parking lot in the Bronx. But when the construction was almost completed, this place was flooded due to rains, and the project was decided to be moved. On October 3, Adams stated that the facility was being moved to the parking lot of Icahn Stadium on Randall Island.
How much did such a town cost New York
Iscol disclosed a partial price on Tuesday, saying: “Moving the project from Orchard Beach cost approximately $325 and another $000 to set up this facility. We are still analyzing the rest of the costs. We don't know how many people we will take care of. And many costs are added. Therefore, we are now counting many of the current expenses.”
The source previously said that the facility on Orchard Beach, which was supposed to accommodate 1000 people, would cost the city $15 million a month.
“Now it is an institution with 500 beds. But if we need to expand it to 1000, we can do it. We just need to bring in additional staff,” Iskol said.
In addition to the amenities, the illegals who will live in the tent city will be able to come and go as they please. They will be assisted by an hourly bus to Manhattan and back. This increases the likelihood that they will be able to get informal work during the day.
Officials said that from 22:00 on the territory of the town there will be a curfew. But it is not yet clear what will happen to those who break this rule.
