What type of ID is better for a New Yorker

New Yorkers can complete one of three types of identification documents: Enhanced, REAL ID, or Standard. This is reported in detail Department of Vehicles New York.

It should be noted right away that starting from October 2021, in order to board domestic flights, enter certain federal buildings or military bases, you will need to present only REAL ID ((if you do not have a passport).

Enhanced

Enhanced, or extended driver's license can now be used:

• for boarding a domestic flight (within the United States);
• to enter a federal building or military base;
• to cross the US border from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries (prohibited for air travel between these countries);
• to identify using photographs.

This document type complies with the federal REAL ID standard. To get an Enhanced ID, you need to pay $ 30 on top of the usual fees.

You need to visit the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office to verify your identity:

• if you got married and changed your surname: in this case, you need to bring a marriage certificate, and in case of divorce, a decision on divorce or a court order;
• Confirm New York State resident status
• US citizenship;
• date of birth;
• social security status.

This document indicates: your full legal name (first, second, last name), home address (where you live), and also shows the American flag.

REAL ID

A REAL ID, driver’s license, permit or non-driving license can be used:

• for boarding a domestic flight (within the United States);
• to enter a federal building or military base;
• to identify using photographs.

REAL ID complies with the federal standard REAL ID. The paperwork does not entail additional costs, but all ordinary fees for operations are charged.

Requires a DMV office visit to verify your identity:

• if your name has changed, bring your marriage certificate, divorce order or court order;
• to confirm New York State resident status;
• prove that you are legally in the United States;

Standard

Standard driver's license, permit or non-driver's license can be used:

• on domestic flights (only until 1 October 2020 year);
• to identify using photographs.

This type of document does not comply with the federal standard REAL ID. Its execution does not entail additional costs, but all ordinary fees for operations are charged.

It also does not require visiting the office to replace or extend its validity.

The document indicates: your mailing address. Also on the document there is an inscription: "Not for federal purposes" (Not for federal purposes), if it was published after 30 on October 2017.

Also note that for boarding a flight after October 1 on October 2020, you will need a second ID.
