Brooklyn Book Festival: A week of free entertainment awaits reading lovers

The 18th annual Brooklyn Book Festival kicked off on September 24 with a day of virtual programming. And this week there will be events throughout the city, reports Gothamist.

This is a completely free festival. Every year it en masse takes over the area in front of Brooklyn Borough Hall, where booksellers and writers meet with readers and fans in different pavilions. This event will take place on Sunday, October 1st.

A series of in-person events will kick off on September 25, including a zine writing workshop in Gowanus and a conversation with Booker Prize-winning author Ben Okri in Africa Center in East Harlem.

On Saturday, September 30, there will be a day of children's activities with interactive shows, art projects and talks with children. This day is especially loved by educators, according to festival founder Liz Koch, who has no relation to either the billionaires or the former mayor.

Koch said celebrating independent publishing is one of the festival's key priorities.

“It’s a great opportunity to discover new writers, and it’s much more interesting than what you might see in a bookstore,” she said.

More than 200 publishers from across the US and Canada will attend the outdoor festival on Sunday, October 1st. The events will cover a wide range of topics: from the horror genre to poetry and the impact of artificial intelligence on the industry.

The Brooklyn Book Festival runs until October 2. In-person outdoor festival day is Sunday, October 1st at Brooklyn Borough Hall.
