Apartment in Manhattan for $0 per month: the city launched a new housing lottery

NYC Housing Connect launched housing lottery for the building at 124 East 112th Street in East Harlem (Manhattan). The building has 57 apartments. Through a lottery you can rent 33 of them for free or with a huge discount.

The lottery is open to individuals earning up to 50% of their area median income (AMI). In addition, applicants' family members must be at least 62 years of age at the time of application, and they must be eligible for the Section 8 housing assistance program (read more about it here here).

The lottery is for the right to lease 32 studios with a monthly rent of $0. Families with annual incomes between $0 and $56 can apply. One one-bedroom apartment is also available by lottery. It can also be rented for $500 if the average household income does not exceed $0 per year.

Tenants will additionally pay for electricity. The rental price includes heating, hot water and gas for cooking. That is, they, in fact, will also be free.
