The New York City Department of Sanitation is urging residents to report negligent property owners who leave trash on sidewalks. This is a violation of the law and is punishable by fines, reports ABC7.
Landlords, store owners and business owners have a responsibility to keep sidewalks and gutters clear. However, this year the number of complaints about dirty sidewalks and the streets grew by almost 25%.
The agency has created a new portal to file complaints against residential and commercial property owners.

Sanitation officials have already posted information about the two offenders on a newly created online platform Wall of Shame (“Wall of Shame”)
Garbage found near a building at 130 First Avenue in the East Village and a Walgreens in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Both businesses received fines ranging from $100 to $500.
“We will do everything we can to hold them accountable because cleanliness is everyone's business,” the website says.
Many New Yorkers said they believe the trash piles are a problem that is getting out of control.
Sanitation officials say they are trying to cope with an avalanche of complaints. So far this year, more than 48 tickets have been issued, amounting to approximately $000 million.
In addition, on Tuesday, July 23, the service announced the opening of a second site to distribute free compost to New Yorkers. You can donate your yard waste and food waste, and the service will compost it and bring it to you. Click hereto learn more and register.
