A Long Island resident who served in the National Air Guard died in a fall while snowboarding. The tragedy occurred on a covered slope at the American Dream shopping center in New Jersey, reports New York Post.
Peter Matthews, 24, has served in the Maryland Air National Guard for the past two years. On December 8, he fell and hit his head while riding the Big Snow American Dream track at the mall. This was reported by his sister Sarah Matthews.
She, a registered nurse, tried to save her brother. But he died shortly after being rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center.
Peter will be buried next Monday at Calverton National Cemetery in Riverhead, Suffolk County.

Earlier this year, Matthews was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal during an exercise. During the exercise, he “mobilized with his squadron and A-10C Thunderbolt II aircraft from the 104th Fighter Squadron to support two US Army-led exercises in Eastern Europe.” This is stated in the message of the Air Force Base in Maryland, where he was assigned.
“Peter was a truly amazing person and his smile lit up the room. If you had the opportunity to talk to him, you immediately knew that he had a great future,” commented US Air Force Senior Master Sergeant Jeffrey Golabievski, commander of the 175th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.
The father of the deceased guy said that Peter wanted to become a commercial pilot after the service.
