A New Yorker narrowly escaped when a construction crane collapsed on top of her car while she was waiting at an intersection. The details of the incident were told by the publication The Guardian.
Danielle Cruz, 22, suffered only minor injuries when a crane collapsed at a construction site in the Bronx on September 20 crushed her car.
Cruz, a local college student, was on her way to class at the time. She noticed how the crane knocked down a lamppost and instantly knew that it could fall on her car.
“It happened slowly and at the same time quickly, as if I felt that something was about to happen,” Cruz said. “This object fell on my car, it completely shattered the windshield, flattened the entire top of my car … and hit me on the head.”
Cruz told rescuers that if she had stopped the car 3 inches (8 cm) further, she would have been dead by now.
After the fall of the crane, the girl was blocked in a broken car, but was able to get out thanks to strangers who rushed to her aid.
“I tried to get out of the car, but the door wouldn't open. And then a guy ran up to the car, opened the door and pulled me out, ”said Cruz.
The victim was taken to the hospital, but the girl did not need hospitalization, as she received only minor injuries.
Tycee Williams, the guy who helped Cruz out, said the impact was very loud, "like the sound of the World Trade Center" (referring to the 11/XNUMX attacks).
Williams elaborated: “I was standing there and suddenly I saw a crane boom fall on the car. It was like a movie."
The guy was afraid that the accident would be fatal for the girl, but, fortunately, she was not injured.
Cruz thanked her rescuers, and also rejoiced at her small stature. In her opinion, if she were a little taller, the injuries could be more serious.
A crane boom broke off and fell while lifting materials at the construction site of an 11-story apartment building. Because of what the crane broke, it is not specified. The local fire department evacuated 29 workers from the scene. A partial stop order was issued for the construction site after an inspection revealed several safety violations.
