A boat sank on the Hudson River: a 7-year-old child was among the dead

A summer boat trip with family and friends on July 12 turned into a tragedy. The apparently overloaded ship capsized near Pier 86 in Manhattan. As a result, a 7-year-old boy and a 50-year-old woman were under the boat, reports New York Post.

Twelve people were on board a small boat called Stimulus Money, which started from New Jersey. Around 14:45 p.m., a large wave caused the boat to capsize on the Hudson River off West 46th Street.

NYPD and FDNY divers tried to rescue people who were trapped under the capsized ship.

According to New York Police Commissioner Kevin Sewell, by the time the woman and the boy were brought to the surface, they were no longer reacting.

At Pier 84, two women who were on the boat said they saw paramedics trying to resuscitate the child. And his mother screamed: “This is my child!”

“The mother of the child was very upset when he was taken to the ambulance. They didn't let her into the ambulance. She was crying,” said Sammy, 27, who declined to give her last name.

“I saw people screaming in the water,” said 28-year-old witness Iaidi Garcia.

The owner of the boat, who was following the vessel on a jet ski, collapsed in tears at the scene when he heard that two people had died.

In addition to the dead, two people, including the captain of the boat, are in critical condition. And another 10 people were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The cause of the incident is under investigation. But a police source said the ship was overloaded. And that the weight of passengers is as important a factor as the number of passengers on board.
