A Russian-speaking immigrant in New York was attacked with a knife: despite being injured, he detained the attacker until the police arrived

A man was stabbed in the back, shoulder and side in an attack in Brooklyn over the weekend. The victim resisted and held the suspect with the help of a neighbor until the police arrived, reports ABC 7.

It happened around 23:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 at the intersection of 62nd Street and Bay Parkway in the Bensonhurst area. Albert Yusupov, 43, was loading his jeep for a trip out of town when a suspect approached him from behind and stabbed him more than 10 times. A fight ensued, and Yusupov managed to subdue the attacker with the help of a neighbor before the police arrived.

“I tried to fight him off, to knock the knife out of his hand,” Yusupov said. “If I had let him go, he would have picked up that knife and finished me off.”

Gerald Georges was arrested and charged with assault, threats and harassment.

Yusupov is married and has an 8-month-old child. But, fortunately, his wife Yana and their son were at home and were not attacked.

However, the wife watched everything that was happening. Hearing his screams, she called 911.

“I was screaming, “Oh God, help me!” she recalled. “When you see how someone close to you is being hurt and you can’t do anything, you feel vulnerable, helpless, scared.”

The victim is in the Maimonides Medical Center. He has already undergone surgery to repair the shoulder muscle. Now he has a long road to recovery and numerous operations.

“My lung was filling with blood,” he explained. “With every breath, I could feel the air leaving my lungs.”

Authorities say that Georges, shortly before he attacked Yusupov, stabbed his mother at their nearby home. The blows were delivered to the stomach and wrist. Doctors say her life is not in danger. The victim ended up in the same hospital as Yusupov.

“It brought me to tears,” Yusupov said. “I just had my first child. I can’t even imagine my child trying to take my life.”

According to reports, Georges had previously been arrested for robbery and assault.
