State and city governments will work with local community organizations to help illegal immigrants in New York City hit by Hurricanes Henry or Ida, writes Silive.
Illegal immigrants are not eligible for financial aid from FEMA... But the new program will provide grants to local nonprofits, which then distribute funds to storm-hit illegal immigrants.
“When I saw the devastating impact of Hurricane Ida, I promised that we would do everything in our power to help the affected communities recover. The funding is a fulfillment of that promise, ”said New York Governor Katie Hockool.
“With these resources for unregistered New Yorkers who are not eligible for FEMA and forging partnerships with local organizations, we can close the aid gap and help New Yorkers in need,” the Governor added.

The Make the Road office in Port Richmond will work to distribute funds to the local community. The Staten Island office will be part of the program launched on September 27.
Make the Road chief executive Teo Oshiro said the funding will help New Yorkers' most vulnerable residents. They all suffered from the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, which struck the city in early September.
“The flooding from Hurricane Ida devastated our communities, causing massive damage to the homes of many of New Yorkers' most vulnerable residents,” Oshiro said.
More than five thousand illegal immigrants were affected by the hurricane
The program is administered by the New York State Office of New Americans. Mayor Bill de Blasio said more than 5000 illegal immigrants in five New York boroughs were hit by the hurricane.
“We will ensure New Yorkers have access to the assistance they need to recover from the devastating impact of Hurricane Ida,” de Blasio said. “Regardless of immigration status, we will support the victims of the climate crisis and are ready to help every step of the way.”
