New Year hikes: New Yorkers are invited to celebrate 2023 in the park

Governor Kathy Hokul is inviting New Yorkers to kick off the new year in nature as part of the 12th annual First Day Hike program. Silive.
On January 1, 2023, 100 different hiking options will be offered to those interested in state parks, as well as historic sites, wildlife areas, canal trails and public lands throughout New York State, including Staten Island's Clay Pit Ponds State Park and the unique Mount Loretto area.
“There is no better way to start the New Year than with family and friends in the midst of winter beauty,” Hokul said. "With a large number of first-day hikes across the state, New Yorkers can take a break from the hustle and bustle of the holidays and welcome the new year with optimism."
Hike details
Walks and hikes that are suitable for the whole family range from one to five miles depending on the location.
The State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Department, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and the Canal Corporation are co-hosting Day One Hikes.

The 2023 program includes new hikes on the Genesee Valley Greenway, New York State Bird Trail. As well as four trips as part of the program “On the channels“, including walks on the Empire State Trail.
