New attraction at Rockefeller Center: Overcome your fear of heights and get an impeccable view of New York City

Ready to soar over 240 meters above New York City? The Beam attraction opened at Rockefeller Center, which was part of a complex of works to reconstruct the building, reports secretnyc.

Back in April 2022, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) approved plans to modernize the observation deck, including The Beam. A new attraction 240 meters above New York City that will thrill your nerves opened to the public on December 1st.

The Beam is a spectacular recreation of the famous 1932 photograph “Lunch on Top of a Skyscraper,” showing 11 construction workers eating lunch on a steel beam during the construction of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Now, 91 years later, the beam has returned to Rockefeller Center and offers an incredible interactive attraction on the 69th floor of the building.

Thrill-seeking visitors will be strapped into seats on a recreated beam and lifted 3,5 meters above the observation deck platform. The beam will then rotate 180º and reveal a breathtaking view of Central Park.

Guests can warm up with hot cocoa and light bites from Top of the Rock's new restaurant, The Weather Room. When you reach an altitude of over 240 meters, you will get a once-in-a-lifetime photo.

Tickets are already available for sale $25 per person as an additional option for Top of the Rock General Admission and Express Pass holders. Tickets include a digital photograph recreating the famous image.

Reconstruction

The Beam is part of a complete renovation of Rockefeller Center that will significantly enhance the visitor experience at the iconic observation deck.

In 2024, Tishman Speyer will unveil another project, the Sky Lift on the 70th floor, which will lift visitors 9 meters above the topmost roof on a circular glass platform, giving them a 360-degree view of the city.

In addition, a new Mezzanine Level will open, which will tell the history of Rockefeller Center through vibrant interactive exhibits, a new theatrical performance, digital models and other cutting-edge technologies.

LPC Commissioner Sarah Carroll said last year that Top of the Rock is one of the city's most important attractions, attracting residents and visitors to the area and encouraging new businesses to open nearby. So she believes the new attractions will boost potential tourism growth.

Other updates include converting the ticket kiosk into a Top of the Rock store, upgrading the lobby lighting, installing a rooftop beacon and kinetic ball on the 70th floor, and replacing the existing red tiles with sky tile mosaics.
