New Yorkers can now rent some of the city's historic buildings for events. The New York City Department of City Services has relaunched the "Halls of the City" program. Time-out tells in more detail.
The program allows iconic public buildings to be used for weddings, parties, fashion shows, and other events.
The program provides access to several architectural landmarks in the city. These buildings are typically associated with government agencies rather than holidays.
We're talking about spaces with grand courtrooms, marble staircases, and impressive rotundas. Many New Yorkers are familiar with these building and often pass by them. However, they are usually associated more with "important matters" than with celebratory events.
On the subject: The Guggenheim Museum is hosting an exhibition of works by Russian-speaking artists.
These spaces can now be used for private events.
Who has already rented these sites?
These buildings have already attracted high-profile tenants, including singer-songwriter Solange Knowles, designer Prabal Gurung, and financial services company Goldman Sachs.
Some of the buildings have also been used as film sets for movies and TV series, including Law & Order, Marvel's Daredevil, and the Spider-Man films.
Department Commissioner Yume Kitasei said the program makes historical public space more accessible to city residents.
"Imagine exchanging wedding vows in the classic Surrogate's Court or hosting a gala dinner under the impressive ceilings of the Tweed Courthouse. With this new interactive map, New Yorkers can discover these venues and imagine the celebrations they could host," she said.
Surrogate's Court
One of the most impressive venues is Surrogate's Court on Chambers Street.
The building's interior resembles the set of a historical drama, featuring tall marble columns, carved wooden elements, and a wide double staircase.
Last month, fashion brand Alice + Olivia used the space during New York Fashion Week.
Tweed Courthouse
Another notable site is Tweed Courthouse, a neoclassical historic building.
The interior combines classic architectural details with a glass ceiling. The space can accommodate approximately 300 guests for a standing-room-only event.
Therefore, the venue is suitable for corporate receptions and elegant dinners.
Other event buildings
Events can also be held:
- under the great rotunda of the New York County Courthouse;
- in the halls of Brooklyn Borough Hall;
- under the monumental Archway in the David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building.
