Free apartments for seniors: New York City launches new housing lottery

An affordable senior housing lottery has launched in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. Nearly 50 apartments are available at the new Gail P. Duke Senior Residence.
Gail P. Duke Senior Residence is designed for individuals aged 62 and older.
The complex is located on Livonia Avenue in Central Brooklyn.
Residents are offered:
- 24-hour staffed lobby;
- public room;
- computer lab;
- open recreation areas;
- secure Wi-Fi in apartments;
- center for senior adults.

How many apartments are available
The following are available within the lottery:
- 24 studio apartments;
- 23 one-bedroom apartments.
Qualifying tenants will pay 30% of their annual household income for either option.
Who can qualify for a $0 rental?
Any eligible applicant with no income who meets Section 8 program requirements may qualify for $0 rent.
Income Requirements
The maximum family income is:
- $64,800 for a studio apartment for a two-person household;
- $72,900 for a one-bedroom apartment for a three-person household.
