Bob Dylan's Former NYC Home Sells for $7,25 Million

The Manhattan townhouse of American singer, artist, writer and film actor Bob Dylan is on sale for $7,25 million. 6sqft tells more about the star's luxurious real estate.

The house at 242 East 49th Street has an elevator and a gate in the backyard that leads to Turtle Bay Gardens, a private park in the 20 homes.

The renovated 5,7-foot-wide townhouse is asking $7,25 million. Bob Dylan lived there for more than two decades. His neighbors included Katharine Hepburn, Stephen Sondheim and E.B. White.

Five floors of luxury

The five-story, 500-square-foot townhouse was built in 1899. It features stately proportions, seven wood-burning fireplaces, and impressive arched windows. Modern additions include the aforementioned elevator, central air conditioning, and a security system.

Dylan lived here as a renter in the 1980s before buying house a decade later. The singer sold the property in 2005.

An enclosed courtyard leads to a warm and well-appointed eat-in kitchen. Notable features include a six-burner Wolf stove, Sub-Zero refrigerator, custom millwork, and stone countertops. A walk-in pantry leads to a cozy south-facing media room framed by a wall of windows. One level below is a semi-finished basement with laundry, powder room, and storage.

Through a glass door you enter a two-level flagstone terrace and garden. At the rear of this landscaped street entrance is a “secret” low wooden gate leading to a historic communal garden. This is only accessible to the 20 surrounding townhouses.

The light-filled living room floor features a formal living and dining room with a wood-burning fireplace. At the rear, three graceful French doors open onto a brick terrace overlooking the garden below.
