Easter Egg Painting Workshops: Where to Create Your Own Pysanka in New York

The Ukrainian technique of painting Easter eggs is conquering an American city. The focus of many master classes was the tradition of decorating eggs, known as pysankarstvo. ForumDaily New York tells where in the Big Apple you can join this ancient tradition, dating back to pre-Christian times.

At St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, you will learn about the rich history, ancient traditions, and symbolism of the pysanka, the traditional Ukrainian Easter egg. Gloria Horbati, an experienced lecturer and instructor in the creation of pysankas, will introduce visitors to the complex technique wax resistivity using a brush, beeswax and dyes. You will be able to create your treasured pysanka.

Open to all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Necessary materials (they can be purchased at the seminar for a nominal fee):

• 2-3 white raw eggs (without spots or cracks, room temperature);
• soft pencil;
• 2 short candles and a low candlestick.

Turn an ordinary egg into a true work of art! Pysankar artist Larisa Chebinyak will guide participants as they create their own Masterpieces using traditional patterns and techniques. Chebinyak calls her art and workshops Larysanky, a combination of the beginning of her name Laryssa and the ending pysanky. The craftswoman sells her work at fairs and on Etsy.

The event is open to all skill levels (ages 11 and up), and includes all materials and refreshments. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Tickets are available for purchase here.

Pysanka Creation by the Ukrainian American Youth Association

• Date: Sunday, April 12.
• Time: 12:00 – 17:00.
• Location: 140 2nd Avenue, New York, NY.
• Entrance: children 5-12 years old – $15, adults – $30.

During this workshop, participants will learn the art of making pysankas, Ukrainian Easter eggs. Food coloring, beeswax, and a stylus are used to paint the eggs with traditional Ukrainian patterns. All materials are included in the cost of the course. The workshop is open to participants of any age.
