With the 2026 FIFA World Cup underway, New York City officials have warned residents of severe congestion on matchdays. Thousands of fans will be making their way through Manhattan to MetLife Stadium, so the city is urging residents to avoid driving and instead use public transportation. The city authorities have officially announced each day of the event matches in the region, it is called “Gridlock Alert Day.”
The warning applies not only to football fans. Even residents not interested in the tournament may face serious difficulties getting around Manhattan.
Part of Midtown will become a public transportation priority zone.
On match days, some Midtown streets will operate under a special traffic pattern.
42nd Street will become a bus-only corridor from First Avenue to Twelfth Avenue.

Additionally, sections of Fifth Avenue, Sixth Avenue, West 40th Street, and West 41st Street will be restricted to buses, official World Cup vehicles, and emergency services.
The restrictions will come into effect six hours before the start of the match and will remain in effect until three hours after its completion.
Restrictions near Penn Station
Additional closures will affect the area around Penn Station, where heavy traffic is expected after the games.
During rush hour, several blocks near 32nd and 33rd Streets will be closed to traffic.
Businesses are being asked to reschedule deliveries.
In addition, the city asked companies to reschedule freight deliveries to other days.
Delivery restrictions will be in effect in Midtown between 30th and 60th Streets from river to river during peak traffic hours before and after games.
For those who still need to travel to Midtown by car, authorities advise them to prepare in advance for lengthy delays.

Dates when the special regime will be in effect:
- June 13, Saturday;
- June 16, Tuesday;
- June 22, Monday;
- June 25, Thursday;
- June 27, Saturday;
- June 30, Tuesday;
- July 5, Sunday;
- 19 July, Sunday.
During these days, authorities recommend avoiding car travel if possible.
