New York City is phasing out MetroCards: How to transfer your balance to OMNY

December is the last month New Yorkers can use the MetroCard. The city's transit system is transitioning entirely to OMNY. NYPost explains how passengers can transfer their MetroCard balance to a new card in advance.

December marks the last month the MetroCard remains in circulation. After that, the entire New York City public transportation system will switch to OMNY, a tap-to-pay system.

Transition to OMNY

The MTA has replaced the mobile vans that were previously used to provide MetroCard assistance.

They are now working to transfer balances and inform passengers about the new payment method.

You can transfer your remaining balance up until your MetroCard expiration date. This date is located in the upper left corner of the card. The MTA recommends spending or transferring facilities in advance, before the expiration date.

Passengers can upgrade to the OMNY card until December 31. It will be valid for all subway stations, buses, the Staten Island Railway, Hudson Rail Link, the Roosevelt Island Tram, and the AirTrain-Howard Beach and AirTrain-Jamaica stations.

MetroCard balances can be transferred or refunded for up to two years after the card's expiration date.

However, funds can only be transferred in person—at customer service centers or MTA mobile vans. Transfers cannot be made in person or through a machine.

How to get an OMNY card

OMNY cards can be purchased or topped up at special vending machines located in most subway stations. Cards are also sold at select stores throughout the city, including Walgreens, CVS, 7-Eleven, CFSC Checks Cashed, and a number of bodegas.
