Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber announced Wednesday that the MetroCard will be phased out by the end of the year. No final date has been announced, but transport The network will no longer issue new cards.
"Contactless payment for travel is faster and more convenient. It will allow us to expand with discounts and promotions. It is a much more dynamic system," said Lieber.
When will MetroCards be retired?
It seems almost impossible to imagine a city without MetroCards, so the MTA is making the transition easier for busy commuters. MetroCards will continue to work on turnstiles within six months of 2026. New cards will not be sold from the end of 2025.

"Goodbye, MetroCard. You've served us well," Lieber acknowledged. "But it's time to retire you to the Museum of Transportation. You'll spend many happy days there with your old friend, Mr. Token."
