Speed cameras to be installed on New York City bridges and tunnels in new measures aimed at curbing dangerous driving in work zones, reports Time-out.
As part of the state's recently passed $254 billion budget, Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York lawmakers are expanding the city's construction zone speed camera program.
The program will cover the MTA's busiest intersections.
Cameras will be installed on bridges:
- Verrazzano-Narrows;
- Robert F. Kennedy;
- Throgs Neck;
- Bronx-Whitestone;
- Marine Parkway.
Cameras will be installed in the following tunnels:
- Queens-Midtown;
- Hugh L. Carey.
These cameras will automatically issue fines to drivers who drive through work zones. They monitor up to nine areas at a time.

Drivers who exceed the speed limit will be fined $50 for the first violation, $75 for the second violation within 18 months, and $100 for each subsequent violation. The initiative will be in effect until 2031.
"This is another tool to ensure the safety of our maintenance workers and contractors," said Catherine Sheridan, president of MTA Bridges and Tunnels.
In addition to speed cameras, the state budget is implementing a plan to expand automated weight monitoring on overweight trucks. The new sensors will be installed on several city bridges, including the Queensboro and Greenpoint Avenue spans.
Until the cameras are up and running, drivers should brace themselves and perhaps ease off the gas, especially in active construction zones. In the end, a fine may be the least of your problems.
