New York State has identified an error in tax forms that resulted in some residents receiving smaller refunds. The issue is being corrected, and the refunds will be issued automatically, according to reports. Silive.
The Department of Taxation and Finance said the low refunds were due to a typo in the withholding table in tax forms.
The error was discovered in the third week of February.
Who is affected?
In a March notice, tax professionals were informed that the error affected the following New Yorkers:
- married and filing jointly;
- having the status of a surviving spouse.
It is about taxpayers with adjusted annual income between $107,650 and $161,550.
What are the consequences for taxpayers?
Due to the error, taxpayers could:
- receive a smaller return than expected;
- receive a notification about the need to pay additional tax.
On the subject: Nearly a million New Yorkers can get free subway and bus rides.
"We discovered an error in tax calculations that affected a limited number of returns," the department said.
"Affected returns will be automatically recalculated. Corrected notifications, including additional refund amounts, will be sent directly to taxpayers. No action is required from individuals," the agency emphasized.
How many people were injured?
According to the department, the problem affected approximately 52,000 people, which is less than 1% of the total number of taxpayers this season.
Some refunds have already been paid. However, some returns are still being processed.
As of now, approximately 6,000,000 New Yorkers have already filed their taxes.
The rest must do this within the remaining days - until April 15.
