New Yorkers who are late for work, school or any other appointment may receive an official letter from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) stating that your tardiness is their fault, reports AMNY.
This service has been available for quite some time, but is not well known among commuters. If you are late due to subway, bus or commuter train delays, the MTA has your back.
"While we make every effort to keep our trains and buses running on schedule, delays do occur. There are many reasons for delays, including sick passengers, police investigations, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, and other factors," the MTA website says.
How to get an MTA letter
You will need to fill out and submit the MTA Subway and Bus Delay Check form. It can be found here.
The form will ask you questions about your trip, including routes. Train or the buses you used, as well as the total number of minutes of delay and the date on which it all happened.

You will then receive a confirmation email. Once the agency staff has reviewed your request, you will receive a second email with the results. This may take up to three business days.
You can then print or email the letter to your boss, and voila! you're free from liability.
The service only applies to delays greater than 10 minutes that occurred within the last 180 days.
In addition to this service, there is a section where you can leave comments about your trip.
