Rent Assistance in New York: List of Programs and Their Requirements

For New Yorkers who may be at risk of eviction or homelessness, the city offers several rental assistance programs. Pix 11 tells in more detail.
The Department of Social Services is offering New Yorkers the opportunity to join a program to help them rent housing that best suits their needs. In addition, the department will provide assistance with other programsprovided by state and federal governments.
City Fighting Homelessness and Eviction Prevention Supplement (CityFHEPS)
This program helps individuals and families find and keep housing. Through this program, a tenant living in New York City can receive monthly rent for five years.
Eligible candidates:
- low-income families living in shelters;
- individual adults living in shelters;
- low-income families and adults at risk of homelessness.
For those living in shelters, information can be provided by a case manager or housing specialist. Other potential applicants can check themselves for eligibility. here.

Family Homelessness and Eviction Prevention Supplement (FHEPS)
FHEPS pays some or all of the rent for families who have been evicted or are at risk of eviction, or who have lost their homes due to domestic violence.
Suitable candidates include:
- families receiving cash assistance (CA);
- families who have lost their homes due to health or safety issues or certain court decisions;
- families with pregnant women, children under 18 years of age, or children under 19 years of age who are enrolled full-time in secondary school or in a vocational or technical training program;
- families in HRA or DHS shelter;
- families who are currently being evicted or have been evicted in New York City within the last 12 months.

Temporary Aid to Needy Families Program (TANF)
Families eligible for this program can receive up to 60 months of federally funded cash assistance. In most cases, residents receiving temporary cash assistance may be required to work and/or participate in educational activities.

Emergency Assistance/One Shot Deal (SOTA)
New Yorkers are eligible for one-time cash assistance if:
• they can't pay their bills because they lost their job;
• they are paid less at work or if they have another emergency, such as an unexpected medical problem.
Emergency assistance is provided if a person:
- homeless or at risk of losing his home;
- the person's gas or electricity was cut off or he received a notice about it;
- lost clothing, personal belongings or furniture due to theft, fire or natural disaster;
- was subjected to domestic violence;
- has other problems that affect his health and safety or the safety of his family.
