New York City Subway Fares to Rise Again in 2025

The New York City Transportation Authority (MTA) plans to raise the cost of travel on city public transport. One ride on the subway and buses will cost $3 (currently the price is $2,90), reports Time-out.

MTA changes fares in Metro from $2,75 to $2,90 in 2023. MTA fare increases occur every two years. The $3 fare will likely go into effect in August 2025.

The fare increase would have to be proposed to the board, held at a hearing, and formally approved. A $3 fare by next summer would represent a roughly 4% price increase. The transit authority has done this every two years since 2009 (except for 2021, when the price was left unchanged due to COVID).

It is still possible that something will happen and the price will remain the same. But it is quite likely that the $3 tariff will be implemented as planned.

The MTA attributes the price increases to small increases in pensions and health benefits it provides to its employees. And at least New Yorkers are finally seeing some improvements in some trains. In particular, the decommissioning of trains with orange and yellow seats. They will be replaced by new, high-tech R211/R211S trains.
