The New York City Department of Education has given 750 schools permission to hire more than 3700 new teachers in an effort to reduce class sizes. City officials have budgeted the investment for fiscal year 2026.
Smaller class sizes have been shown to result in more personalized learning for students and less stress for teachers. More individualized attention is expected to improve the academic performance of New York City students.
“Reducing class size is one of the best ways to help our students learn and succeed,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. “By hiring 3700 additional teachers, we will give schools the ability to create smaller classes so all of our students can receive more personalized attention.”
Schools were able to submit individual plans to reduce class sizes for the 2025-2026 school year: 800 schools applied, 750 received approval to redesign classrooms and hire new teachers.

The city has decided to give schools the power to determine their own needs and capabilities, which will allow them to implement the class-size reduction program more effectively than if everyone were lumped together.
The new teachers will start working next autumn. Their positions will now be financed from the city budget.
