The race for New York City mayor has begun. The election will be held on November 4, 2025, with the Democratic primary in June. Zohran Mamdani wants to freeze rents, make public transportation and daycare more affordable, and is a vocal critic of American support for Israel.
Position today: a member of the New York State Assembly who represents Queens.
Ideological position: the most left-wing of them all. A pro-Palestinian socialist democrat who isn't ashamed of it.
Main supporters: New York City Democratic Socialists of America, United Auto Workers Region 9A.
Fundraising: has raised $640 to date and $712 million in additional funds as of Feb. 2,8. He has $18 million in the bank, according to the latest estimates from the Campaign Finance Board.
Location: The Peoples Republic of Astoria, Queens.
Problems: It's not so cool to be far left anymore. Mamdani is little known.
Perspectives: If there were any doubts about Zohran Mamdani's viability as a mayoral candidate, they were dispelled by the disclosure of the fundraising information.
Mamdani raised more money during the last cycle than any other candidate. He raised it from more donors — all over the city.
Mamdani could easily appeal to the typical, highly educated socialists in northern Brooklyn and western Queens - and they would already be forming an army of willing agitators for him.
He could attract working-class Muslims outraged by the war in Gaza to his coalition.
Many South Asian voters love the candidate for his successful advocacy for debt relief for taxi licence holders - including through a 15-day hunger strike in 2021.
In the mayoral race, Mamdani has articulated a few simple policy ideas that set him apart. He wants to make public buses free and freeze rents on rent-stabilized housing. Mamdani promises free day care, a $30-an-hour minimum wage, and city-run grocery stores with price caps on basic items.
