How to Apply for Summer Food Benefits for Children in New York

New York families can get $120 per child through the Summer EBT program. Applications for the program are open until September 3, 2025, reports The City.

The payments are part of a federal program that helps cover the cost of summer school meals for children who typically receive free lunches. Since all New York City public school students receive free meals, $120 in food will be provided to all families with school-age children, regardless of income.

Statewide, 79% of New Yorkers reported that they had a harder time affording food in the past year. More than half of public school families are experiencing food insecurity.

A similar program emerged during the COVID pandemic and has been in place for several years.

There are key differences between the two programs, however. All New York City public school families received benefits during the pandemic, but fewer families are eligible for Summer EBT. Now, some New York City families will have to apply to receive the payments, a potential barrier for those who may not be aware of the requirement.

This year, families have more time to apply for benefits.

“Last summer, there was only two months to apply for benefits. That’s a very short period,” said David Rubel, an education consultant who has raised alarm about unused federal benefits. “The good news is that New York State has kept the application on its website. Any family can go there and apply for the summer of 2025.”

Who is eligible for Summer EBT?

A child is eligible for the program only if he or she attends a free-lunch school and meets the family income requirements for free or reduced-price school meals. How to apply for benefits

Most eligible families, including those receiving SNAP, Temporary Assistance or Medicaid, will automatically receive benefits. Those who will automatically receive them will be notified in writing over the summer, state officials said.
