New Yorkers are offered to abandon the word 'mother' and replace it with 'person who gave birth'

At this rate, celebrating Mother's Day in New York may have to be abandoned, suggests New York Post.

Many liberal New York City Council members have begun replacing the word “mother” with gender-neutral terms such as “birthing person” and “birthing parent” in bills and other official documents.

A legislative package approved by the City Council last month to eliminate racial discrimination in maternal health was filled with many examples of council members inserting gender-neutral terms in place of the word "mother."

For example, a resolution sponsored by council member Carlina Rivera (D-Manhattan) urging the state to take steps to better inform the public about caesarean sections notes that the risks for “parents giving birth” (rather than mothers) “include infection, postpartum hemorrhage… and other problems."

A package of seven bills and four resolutions on the topic, recently signed by Mayor Eric Adams, received overwhelming support from the Democrat-majority City Council. At the same time, more conservative members of the council said that they “do not want to participate in the anti-mom program.” And openly wondered: is it only a matter of time before their fellow leftists come up with gender-neutral terms for fathers, such as “sperm suppliers”?

“As a woman who has children, I insist that the word “mother” must exist. We cannot afford to cancel something so significant,” said council member Joanne Ariola. She has three sons.

Council Minority Leader Joseph Borelli (Republican from Staten Island) also said he "will never stop using the term 'mother' to describe women who have children."

“If someone finds it offensive, he can vote for someone else,” the politician stressed.

Briana Mulligan, spokeswoman for the Council's Democratic Majority, defended the gender-neutral wording. And she noted that inclusiveness does not cancel anyone and benefits everyone.

“The council is full of mothers who are proud to have put forward these bills to support the inclusive protection of all people who can get pregnant and give birth, whether they identify or express their gender,” she added.
