Gov. Kathy Hokul won the election, receiving a full four-year term as head of New York state. She became the first woman to hold this position by election, before that she became governor automatically. After resignation of Andrew Cuomo she took his place because she was lieutenant governor, recalls NPR.
Hokul was involved in the campaign shortly after taking office. And the polls showed that the race against Long Island Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin could end in her loss.
Zeldin, who has secured the support of the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, has focused his campaign on fighting crime and inflation. But he was unable to overcome the significant Democratic lead in the state. The Republicans have not won a New York statewide election since 2002.

Hokul won the state primary in June.
During the campaign, Hokul was highly critical of Zeldin for his warm relationship with Trump and alleged opposition to abortion.
