The 30-year-old runner collapsed at the finish line of the Brooklyn Half Marathon and later died, authorities said.
Law enforcement officers said that five other participants in the competition received various injuries and were hospitalized in a Coney Island hospital.
The 13,1-mile (21 km) annual run starts from the Brooklyn Museum to the Coney Island waterfront.

This is the second person whose life was cut short during the marathon. In 2014, a competitor died after finishing when the humidity and temperature were also high.
The New York Road Runners website warned of high temperatures and humidity ahead of the race. A few hours after it began, the National Weather Service reported poor air quality.
