Budget travelers know that one of the cheapest ways to get to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is by taking the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) from Penn Station. However, for those who live or work on the East Side of Manhattan, the trip to Penn Station and then to JFK Airport can be a long and hassle. Fortunately, now there is a new fast and profitable way to get from the city center to the airport. The points guy.
The New York City Transportation Authority (MTA) launched a new LIRR route on January 25. The train runs from Grand Central Madison to Jamaica Station (Queens), which is approximately 15 minutes from JFK Airport by AirTrain. This new service will complement existing trains from Penn Station.
The first train left Jamaica at 10:45 and arrived at Grand Central Madison at 11:07. Over the next three weeks, the MTA is planning limited service on this route to give passengers time to get used to the new terminal and new transport links. During this trial period, customers can use tickets from Penn Station to board LIRR trains from Grand Central Madison.
Final Schedule
After the trial period, trains will run from 6:15 to 20:00 on weekdays and from 7:00 to 23:00 on weekends. They will be between Grand Central Madison and Jamaica every 30 minutes. The MTA said that over time, the frequency of traffic is likely to be increased, but did not disclose any details.

A fare on the new route costs only $15,75 one way.
An off-peak city ticket for the LIRR from Grand Central to Jamaica costs $7,75, and for the AirTrain from Jamaica to the JFK airport terminals for another $8 if you already have an MTA MetroCard. For those who don't have one, buying a MetroCard costs an additional $1.
During peak hours, the LIRR fare rises to $10,75, raising the cost of the entire trip to $18,75.
Riding the LIRR from Grand Central Madison is an affordable alternative to JFK for those who live on or near the East Side of Manhattan.
