The report compiled data from 947 metro areas from 37 countries to compare travel delays, costs and trends.
Congestion and losses
In 2023, New York lost $9,1 billion due to traffic congestion, costing $1762 per driver.
The data showed that the average speed within 1,6 mile of the city center was 17 km per hour. Drivers developed it up to 24 km during peak hours and 48 km between morning and afternoon traffic.
“Traffic congestion is both a curse and a barometer of economic health. Traffic jams symbolize busy activity, but at the same time hinder it, said Bob Pichu, transportation analyst at INRIX. – A surge in traffic congestion in urban areas signals a renewed economic recovery from COVID-19. However, this has resulted in billions of dollars in wasted time for drivers.”
New York saw a slight improvement from its 2022 traffic report.
Back then, drivers lost 105 hours in traffic jams.
Last year's numbers were 11% higher than during COVID-19. The area is returning to pre-pandemic traffic congestion in 2019. Then New Yorkers lost 140 hours.
